How Paramics Discovery Works
Paramics Discovery reproduces real-world traffic conditions in a computer model by simulating the detailed behaviour of individual vehicles on a user-defined road network.
The software models all road users – including cars, HGVs, buses, cyclists, and pedestrians – as independent entities. Using advanced algorithms, the software replicates human behaviour and interactions. This captures the subtle triggers of congestion, allowing transport planners to accurately forecast the ripple effects of network changes within a high-fidelity 3D environment.
Whatever you want to test, Paramics Discovery lets you assess the impacts quickly and simply. Paramics offers an easy to use interface, not only for building networks or standard operations, but also for all aspects of microsimulation, particularly data analysis.
Key capabilities
- Create your road network from one junction to a whole city quickly and easily.
- Assign routes and visualise traffic behaviour.
- Calibrate the model to match the real world with the help of built-in presents.
- Test a wide range of designs and scenarios, from parking strategies to infrastructure improvements
- Present to clients using high fidelity 3D simulations.
Experience the future of traffic simulation in the latest release.
The latest version of Paramics Discovery brings some great enhancements designed to streamline your workflow, enhance model coding functionality and provide more import and export opportunities
New features in the latest release:
- Simulation Manager Server – A new version of the simulation manager which allows you to submit models to Simulation Manager on other PCs using a browser.
- Run manager – Add and delete runs from your statistics database and recover statistics from ‘failed’ runs.
- Signal Setting Enhancements – Dedicated Pedestrian phases now included as well as ability to modify stage green/red times and control next stage to run
- Enhanced User interface controls – Network selection using freehand tool, kerb curvature controls, in-network editing of link width, filter controls on all dialogs with lists – and more.
- Increased Public Transport functionality – Use different sets of PT services in different run configurations. New global release time variation and PT stop adherence now included.
How does microsimulation differ from traditional traffic modelling?
Unlike strategic models that predict broad trends, microsimulation reproduces real-world conditions by simulating the detailed behaviour of individual vehicles on a user-defined network. By applying microscopic algorithms it captures the high-frequency interactions that cause congestion, providing more accurate results for complex urban environments.
How much does Paramics Discovery cost?
Paramics Discovery licences are priced according to the area of the model network in square kilometres. Licences start from 1km2 and go all the way to unlimited size and are priced accordingly. Please contact us to discuss pricing options.
Can Paramics model active travel modes?
Since Version 26, the software has featured dedicated cycling capability. Planners can now simulate cyclists and visualise pedestrians alongside motorised traffic to test the viability of cycle lanes, LTNs, and early-start signals. These models provide the essential data needed to quantify carbon reductions for government funding bids.
What are the main applications and benefits of using Paramics Discovery?
Paramics Discovery can test various transport planning scenarios including assessing traffic impacts on road networks, new junction designs, infrastructure changes, traffic signal control modifications, public transport operations, roadworks, and event planning. It offers fast network construction, dynamic assignment features that reflect real-life choice behaviour, automatic analysis of multiple simulation runs, and compatibility with established assessment tools for economic and environmental impact analysis.
What support and training is available for Paramics Discovery?
Paramics Discovery offers its own Support Centre, with a comprehensive knowledge base and the ability to directly ask Paramics agents detailed queries. Our YouTube channel also features detailed videos on coding techniques, new features and more. Dedicated training courses are also available in person or online. Please contact us to discuss training options.
Industry-leading traffic simulation software trusted by professionals
Paramics Discovery is a trusted software used by many public and private sector organisations. It is the simulation tool of choice for a number of well -known local transport authorities, transport and global engineering consultancies.
“Paramics Discovery is easy to use, not only building network or standard operations, but in all aspects of microsimulation, especially data analysis”.
