Improving capacity of London’s most iconic station

As the terminus of the East Coast Main Line, King’s Cross is a Grade 1 listed station and remains a vital transport hub for the UK. By the early 2000s, the station was struggling to cope with increasing passenger numbers, which had soared to around 25 million annually. In 2007, Network Rail embarked on an ambitious £550m redevelopment, aiming to more than double the station’s capacity to 47 million passengers per year while preserving its architectural heritage. The station is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering and was designed by Lewis Cubitt in 1852.

The complex redevelopment project posed significant challenges. The primary issues to be resolved were severe overcrowding and poor pedestrian circulation. The 1893 Handyside footbridge, which featured in the Harry Potter films, was a major bottleneck. It only gave access to half of the station’s platforms and had no step-free access, making it unsuitable for anyone with reduced mobility. The outdated bridge was also contributing to a cramped, poorly lit environment that detracted from the station’s original splendour.

SYSTRA was appointed lead designer and multi-disciplinary engineering consultant by Network Rail, entrusted with a pivotal role in transforming King’s Cross for the modern age. The demanding brief encompassed designing the refurbishment of the iconic double-barrelled trainshed roof, designing an accessible new footbridge and restoring the station’s original features in partnership with English Heritage. Network Rail also wanted to significantly reduce the station’s energy consumption by design intervention by incorporating sustainable technology into the design.

SYSTRA oversaw several parts of this major restoration work including areas such as:

pioneering sustainable design with heritage restoration     

SYSTRA needed to devise a solution that was not only an engineering success, but also an exemplar of sustainable design and heritage conservation. Our response was a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary design that seamlessly integrated architectural restoration with advanced engineering.

To replace of the Handyside footbridge, we designed a modern new structure to connect directly with the eastern mezzanine and provide access to every platform. The bridge consists of a shallow steel deck, glass parapets with no vertical supports, and glass-panelled lifts and escalators providing step-free access to every platform. This elegant “blade of glass” and steel structure was meticulously crafted to create a low visual impact while providing the necessary capacity to ease pedestrian flows around the station.

We worked in partnership with English Heritage with the brief to restore King’s Cross Station and retain its original features wherever possible in order to safeguard its architectural integrity.

This involved work on a large scale, including demolition of the old front extension to reveal the stations original façade and restoration of the twin train sheds roofs letting light stream back into the station. It also involved works on a small scale where original stone cornicing and riveted steel connections were painstaking restored.

To meet sustainability objectives, we designed a groundbreaking new glazing system for the trainshed roof. It integrated “beer mat” type solar panels across a vast 2,500m² area, which could generate up to 175,000kWh of electricity per year.

cutting-edge engineering to resolve capacity challenges 

Collaboration and innovation were the hallmarks of our approach to the King’s Cross redevelopment. Our team of civil, structural and environmental engineers fostered strong partnerships with all stakeholders, including English Heritage, to ensure the design respected the building’s historical significance at every stage.

The joint approach also focused on designing and coordinating plans to minimise disruption. Preserving the heritage had to be considered within the context of a working modern railway – ensuring train services could continue while maintaining safe passenger and platform access during the construction.

The design for the new footbridge required an innovative approach to address two major engineering challenges. To ensure the bridge achieved the required structural resonance under heavy footfall, we used advanced computer simulation tools from our automotive division to conduct natural frequency analyses. These confirmed that the slender glass bridge would resist pedestrian-induced resonance, and that any deflection would fall within manageable limits. Secondly, to address security concerns, our design specified blast-proof glazing. Laminated glass panels were engineered to crack but remain contained within their frames in the event of an explosion, minimising the risk of fragmentation.

To meet the client brief, sustainability was embedded from the earliest stages of the project. We used a robust environmental management system to ensure that sustainable measures identified during the initial design phase were successfully carried through to final delivery.

improved visitor experience for passengers

The King’s Cross Station redevelopment project has improved the visitor experience for millions of passengers, while pioneering new standards of safety, accessibility and environmental responsibility.

It has proved both a critical and a popular success. The project demonstrates the ability of SYSTRA to combine cutting-edge engineering with sustainable design and sensitive heritage restoration. It has successfully remodelled the iconic station to accommodate growing passenger numbers while preserving its unique heritage and character.

The new footbridge has resolved long-standing circulation and accessibility issues, reducing overcrowding and improving accessibility. Its unobtrusive design has allowed the full grandeur of the station’s architecture to be revealed once more.

The sustainability measures introduced set a national benchmark for environmental station redevelopment. The solar roof now generates enough clean energy to meet around 10% of the station’s total energy needs, saving more than 100 tonnes of CO₂ each year.
