SYSTRA Design Co-ordinator Lucy Davison has scooped three top accolades this year as she continues her commitment to shaping a successful career and inspiring others into the rail industry

Lucy Davison, a Design Co-ordinator with SYSTRA, is ending 2023 with a bang after scooping a series of awards and being recognised by her colleagues and throughout the industry for her passion and dedication.

During the year, Lucy was named The Royal Navy Higher or Degree Apprentice of the Year 2023 for Yorkshire & Humber in the National Apprenticeship Awards, the Young Rail Professional Apprentice of the Year, and won SYSTRA’s Early Careers Excellence Award late 2022.

She was recognised across all these achievements for her commitment to her career, her outstanding progress in her studies, and her proactive involvement towards inspiring her colleagues and future apprentice engineers, especially women and young people. As part of her enthusiasm for encouraging others into engineering, Lucy has visited more than 30 local schools and colleges in her career to encourage future generations to consider an apprenticeship route into the rail sector. She has also lead and participated in several high-profile Institution of Civil Engineers events, including at The House of Lords.

Earlier this year she also completed a 12-month tenure on the highly competitive Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) President’s Future Leader Scheme 2022-23.

Lucy joined SYSTRA’s apprenticeship programme in 2014 as an Assistant Track Technician. Since then she has achieved a BEng degree in Civil Engineering with First Class Honours from Teesside University and wishes to further her studies through achieving an MSc in Railway Systems Engineering and Integration at the University of Birmingham. Lucy will also be joining SYSTRA’s ‘Leadership and Management’ programme to develop her skills in railway management, helping her to achieve the next stage in her career journey.

I’m so proud to be an engineer working on major railway infrastructure projects, and it’s been an incredible year for me. Gaining so much recognition, within SYSTRA and from the industry, is really rewarding.

Lucie continues:My achievements are the result of the collective efforts and support from my colleagues and network; each of my awards are a testament to the generosity and quality of senior colleagues at SYSTRA who have continually, willingly, invested time and energy throughout my career, sharing knowledge and mentoring me to aid my professional growth. The support from across SYSTRA is amazing, and I’m thankful to all my colleagues for believing in me and giving me the challenges and opportunities I need to progress. SYSTRA is a fantastic place to work and I encourage everyone to consider an apprenticeship as a route into engineering.

John Oldridge, Practice Director, SYSTRA, added: “We’re all so proud of Lucy. She grabs every opportunity with both hands, always achieving the best and inspiring those around her in the process. It’s an absolute delight to watch her grow in confidence as she has undertaken leadership roles on major rail projects.”
