The U-shaped viaduct

The U-shaped viaduct is the brainchild of a multidisciplinary team of experts from SYSTRA whose aim was to come up with an economical structure combining all the components of the system to provide a practical solution for both installation and maintenance.

SYSTRA has taken out an international patent to protect the U-shaped viaduct.

Main advantages of the system

  • optimal integration into the urban environment (reducing the visual impact by 50%),
  • integrated noise protection,
  • integration of cable stays and system function,
  • possibility of reducing the length of the viaduct by 1.5 to 2 metres compared to conventional design viaducts, as the main part of the station is made up of the viaduct itself,
  • possibility of reducing station buildings by 1.5 to 2 metres,
  • inclusion of safety devices designed to keep the train on the viaduct in the event of any derailment (which is not possible with standard noise protection systems),
  • inclusion of walkways for maintenance and evacuation on either side of the track,
  • cost reduction, in terms of construction of both the viaduct and the -* system,
  • flexible construction programme (precast beams and slabs cast in situ, precast segmental construction, cast in situ construction, full precast span method),
  • speed of construction, construction can be started at different points along the line.
