BG&E, now part of SYSTRA, delivered structural and civil engineering services for the AU$360 million St John of God Midland Public Hospital, the first new hospital in Perth’s north-eastern corridor in more than 50 years.
Completed in 2015, the 307-bed facility was delivered through a public-private partnership with the Western Australian Government and designed to support a broad range of clinical services across public and private healthcare.
Structural design for challenging ground conditions
The site presented complex ground conditions, including contaminated soils and reactive clays. BG&E developed a piled foundation solution to manage potential long-term ground movements and support the building’s structural performance.
The five-storey hospital uses concrete floor systems, with reinforced concrete cores and shear walls providing lateral stability.
Flexible clinical environments
The hospital incorporates 31 types of purpose-designed healthcare pods, configured to meet different patient needs across assisted living, maternity, aged care and mental health services.
These purpose-designed environments support a diverse range of clinical needs within a single healthcare facility, bringing together public and private hospital services within one development.
