BG&E, now part of SYSTRA, delivered structural, civil and construction engineering services for the new St John of God Midland Private Hospital, a 17,000 sq m standalone healthcare facility in Midland, Western Australia.
Opened in August 2026, the 123-bed hospital expands access to private medical and surgical services for communities across Perth’s eastern suburbs and the surrounding region.
A new standalone private hospital
The new hospital was developed approximately 300 metres from the existing St John of God Midland Public Hospital campus. Its opening enabled the transfer of 60 private beds and three operating theatres at the former co-located public and private hospital to the public system, increasing public hospital capacity while expanding private healthcare services in a new standalone facility.
The hospital includes 123 overnight and same-day beds, eight operating theatres, a critical care unit and a day surgery unit. It also provides the region’s first interventional cardiology service, supported by a cardiac catheterisation laboratory.
Engineering for flexibility and efficient delivery
BG&E’s involvement extended from feasibility through construction documentation and administration. The scope included assessment of geotechnical and environmental conditions, structural design, site-wide civil engineering and construction engineering.
Future flexibility was incorporated into the structural design to accommodate changes in use and the evolution of building services over time. The hospital’s large floor plate uses a post-tensioned concrete flat plate system, with the structural grid coordinated with the architectural layout.
BG&E also optimised the floor plate by eliminating permanent movement joints, reducing structural complexity and future maintenance requirements. Close coordination with building services supported the efficient installation of the structural system and contributed to programme savings during construction.
