MVA organizes an innovative study on transport journeys in Singapore

In order to have a better understanding on public transport journeys in the city-state, MVA, SYSTRA’s Asian subsidiary, conducts an innovative survey with a smartphone app.

A dual and innovative methodology

Achieving Sustainable Transport Solutions including ongoing development and rapid expansion of the public transport network are a key themes in the development in Singapore. With more than 5.5 million inhabitants, the city-state has a very high density-level of population. In order to ensure that transport plans meet the needs of the population, and to record the latest characteristics of travellers, the LTA conducts regular interview surveys with the travelling public including household interview surveys every 4-5 years. The LTA have recently commissioned MVA to lead the studies from 2016 to 2019.

This surveys will be carried out in two ways:

  • a traditional approach by interview survey of the public, including 15,000 participants respondents who will be interviews in their homes and answer questions on their travelling characteristics and also attitudes towards their future use of four methods of transport: metro, bus, car-sharing, and soft mobility options (walking and cycling).
  • an innovative approach involving the recruitment of a 30,000 participants for a Mobile Travel Survey which will feature a smartphone app to record their journey.
  • Follow-up monitoring surveys of 5,000 participants, including a retained panel group of 1,000 respondents, will be carried out in each of the years 2017, 2018 and 2019.

A study for a long-term cooperation

The results will be used to help shape transport policies and strategy in the future and to update the Land Transport Authority’s Strategic Transport Models. The study will also include surveys of the passengers of Singapore’s latest metro line, the DownTown Line. This will be conducted a few months after opening of the two final phases in 2016 and 2018. The survey will be of 5,000 passengers in each of the years with the aim of understanding the impact of the new metro line on travel habits.

This survey is part of a long-term partnership between SYSTRA MVA and LTA: previously, MVA have been involved in previous major travel surveys in 2004, 2008 and 2012. With this new contact, the Singaporean authorities renew their confidence towards the SYSTRA Group for the coming years.
