The creation of a metro network should enable the city of Kanpur, the most populous megacity in the State of Uttar Pradesh in India and one of the nerve hubs of the Indian economy, to follow a sustainable development path, provide better links its various public services and industrial zones, and offer efficient mobility capable of boosting the tourism sector.

Effective collaboration with our client

SYSTRA has been the design partner for our client Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRCL) on the Kanpur Metro since 2019. When complete the Kanpur Metro will have two lines, Orange and Blue.

Construction of the 23.8km Orange Line from Kanpur to Naubasta began in November 2019 with the 8.98km stretch from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel. The alignment comprises 15.2km of elevated section and 8.6km of underground section with 21 stations.

The 8.6km Blue Line will run from Agricultural University to Barra-8 and will have 4.2km of elevated section and 4.4km of underground section with 8 stations.

Innovation at the forefront

On 28 December 2021, Kanpur celebrated the inauguration of the first section of the Orange Line This portion covers about a fourth of the total length of the network, the next segments of which should open by 2024. But already, the 32 months it has taken to complete the project makes it the fastest built metro in India, a feat made possible via the use of the U-shaped viaduct patented by SYSTRA, thanks to a faster and more economical construction using prefabricated beams and caissons.

Drawing on experience

SYSTRA is the design partner of UPMRC for both Lucknow and Kanpur metros and has used its experience acquired on the Lucknow metro, especially to reduce design times during the execution phase, but also to improve practices and methods during monitoring of the works. In the space of just five years, we will be able to fully develop the design and then support it during construction, providing our client UPMRCL with a range of skills across several areas of expertise for both overhead and underground lines.
