In 2024, SYSTRA won a major Project Management and Construction Management Services (PMCM) contract to develop the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network in the Holy City of Madinah, which has 1.5 million inhabitants and welcomes 7 million pilgrims every year.
A HIGHLY STRATEGIC PROJECT
The Madinah BRT project is an integral part of the city’s major transport initiative to put in place large capacity public transport modes. It is part of the Pilgrim Experience Program, which in turn is part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 plan.
The aim is to have up to 500 stations, in order to cover 80 to 90% of the zone by 2030, with the main objective of improving the public transport system, ensuring fluid mobility for visitors, reducing traffic and providing a safe and sustainable mode of transport for residents, visitors, and pilgrims.
For this project, the Al Madinah Region Development Authority (MMDA) chose the consortium led by Egis and formed with SYSTRA, in the context of the PMCM contract).
For the PMCM, the SYSTRA team’s assignments SYSTRA cover two main contracts:
- procurement of buses, operation and maintenance (Design, Build and Operate)
- civil works and infrastructure of the buses network (Design & Build)
The SYSTRA-Egis consortium follows on from the preliminary design and tender studies for the BRT Network, which was carried out in 2015.
