The new Marseille Metro – NEOMMA – is a highly complex project designed to modernise and automate Marseille’s two metro lines and renew rolling stock.
challenge
The Marseille Metro Network is comprised of 40 year old trains operating on two lines over 22km and spanning 29 stations. The NEOMMA project, expected to be completed by 2027, will modernise the network and convert it to a fully automated operation.

APPROACH
SYSTRA has been engaged to carry out the following tasks across the four migration phases of the project, without any disruption to services during this time:
- System engineering studies.
- Migration studies.
- Operation studies.
- Electrical and environmental studies.
In addition, SYSTRA staff are working as an integrated team with Alstom, carrying out system testing activities prior to each migration step.
BENEFIT
The new metros are environmentally friendly and eco-designed; they will be 96% recoverable at the end of their lifespan and consume 25% less energy than the current metros. They will also incorporate the latest technological developments to increase comfort, availability, accessibility and passenger information, and facilitate maintenance.
