To the east of Copenhagen, the Wilders Bridge has spanned the canal of the same name in the heart of the Danish capital for over 120 years. This historic structure, the inspection of which revealed deterioration of its oak support piles, is undergoing renovation until the end of 2026.
The latest stage for the SYSTRA Denmark teams involved constructing two new pillars and reinforcing the ends of the abutments.
A central role for SYSTRA’s Danish teams
SYSTRA Denmark is the lead consultant for the renovation of the bridge in partnership with Danish contractor and construction company Jorton A/S, on behalf of our client Wilders Plads Property Owners’ Association.
Over a period of three years, our teams prepared preliminary studies and detailed design studies for the project, as well as providing consulting services on environmental issues for the existing bridge piers and abutments at each end. We then contributed to the construction management and technical supervision of the project.
Renovating a historic bridge of this age and importance, while ensuring uninterrupted access to Wilders Island, has been both a technical and logistical challenge. It is a great example of what can be achieved through strong teamwork and close cooperation between client, contractor and consultants, and we are proud of SYSTRA Denmark’s contribution to the project.

Uninterrupted access to Wilders Island
As Wilders Bridge is the only access to Wilders Island for fire and rescue services, waste collection and large deliveries of goods to traders on the island, it is essential that the bridge remains in operation throughout the project. Our teams have ensured that these requirements have been met.
When the project is completed during 2026, local residents will have a strengthened and future-proof bridge that can last for many years to come.
