Context

 

We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer, with particular specialism in tunnel ventilation, to join our engineering team.  This position within our MEP engineering team will suit a committed and ambitious engineer who can demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills combined with commercial awareness and the ability to play their part in a dynamic high-performance team.

 

The Principal Mechanical Engineer will be accountable for the delivery of tunnel ventilation design allocated to MEP Projects, including but not limited to high-speed rail.

  • This role requires considerable professional experience and expertise in order to manage complex or non-standard design solutions.
  • Have a good understanding of CSM/CDM regulations and requirements.
  • Good communication and presentation skills for external presentations to clients.
  • Management of a team of Mechanical Engineers on allocated projects.
  • Maintaining good relationships with all external parties to enhance the reputation of the company.
  • Maintaining good relationships with engineers from other internal discipline teams to promote good inter-discipline working relationships and a “One Team” ethos.

Missions/Main Duties

The Principal Mechanical Engineer’s main duties will be to develop solutions for tunnel ventilation for MEP projects including high-speed rail, lead a team of Mechanical Engineers reporting to the Team Leader / Discipline Lead M&E and to be responsible for:

  • Ensuring projects are completed to meet all client’s requirements and applicable standards and to an agreed budget and programme.
  • Plan the project works and provide forward view resource forecasting to enable the team leader to allocate suitable resource to the projects.
  • Identify changes to the projects client requirements and raise the changes with the SYSTRA Project Management Team.
  • Provide monthly cost to complete forecasts to the SYSTRA Project Management Team.
  • Review and coordinate designs, specifications and drawings for MEP and TVS systems specific for MEP projects, including high-speed rail requirements ensuring alignment with project needs and industry best practices.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and interface management with civil, structural, architectural, and rail systems engineering teams.
  • Support the implementation of sustainability and energy efficiency measures.
  • Monitor project progress and technical issues; prepare progress, quality and safety documentation as required.
  • Support value engineering, risk assessments and technical query resolution.

Profile/Skills

Essential

  • Proven experience in MEP/TVS with a strong focus on rail/high-speed rail or transportation sectors.
  • Proven experience in the design/review, installation, and commissioning of tunnel ventilation systems.
  • Familiarity with high-speed rail station and tunnel MEP systems (HVAC, fire protection, power, lighting, plumbing, etc.).
  • Experience of working with multidisciplinary teams in large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; fluent in English.
  • Flexibility in working hours will be required to meet the demands of the role.
  • Ability to travel to client sites and other SYSTRA offices will be required.
  • Detailed knowledge of construction principles and standards.

 

 

Desirable

  • UAE and GCC experience and/or previous consultancy environment experience advantageous.
  • Able to undertake overseas assignments where required.
  • Experience in working with offshore production centres.
  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.
  • Qualified to HNC or equivalent.
  • Significant engineering design and site experience in a similar consultancy or contractor organisation.
