“Joining SYSTRA was a big step for Bamser. The last year has been a real game changer as we expand our offerings and ability to bring global expertise to our local clients” commented Ben Crosby, Executive Director.
Jon Daley, EGM Infrastructure said “The synergy and complementary service offerings have provided a real benefit to both sides, positioning SYSTRA as a serious player both in ANZ and globally. It’s been fantastic working with our tunnelling design colleagues at SYSTRA India, SWS in Italy and Subterra in Spain and our people have enjoyed being part of a global tunnelling capability network.”
SYSTRA Bamser began sharing offices from day 1 in Melbourne, which was a real success for integration. Followed soon after by a merge into our Chifley Tower Sydney Head Office and finished a few weeks ago coming together in a whole new office space in Ann Street Brisbane. The new Brisbane office is now suitably sized to soon welcome our RSA colleagues who will join the SYSTRA family imminently.
Alana Newbrook, CEO, SYSTRA ANZ said “It has been a big year for all of us as we have exponentially grown. What has been most rewarding to see is the multi-disciplinary teams working alongside each other and pitching for and delivering work that 1 year earlier, we wouldn’t have been invited to participate in. This extension of our capability and buzz in the office as we win new work makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
Tim Brown, Executive Director added “Being physically located together across ANZ has resulted in a number of wins for both staff and clients. The ability to bounce ideas off each other and to bring not only an expanded remit of local experience, but global best practice to the ANZ market has been a real step change. We cant wait to see what year 2 has in store!”

Read more sur SYSTRA BamserAfter commencing with SYSTRA in 2014 at the group’s headquarters in Paris, Romain has spent the last three years in Hong Kong, the largest of our offices in Asia.
With 10+ years’ experience, Romain brings a unique set of skills and knowledge to add to our growing ANZ team. He is a certified BREEAM Infrastructure Assessor – one of the world’s leading science-based sustainability assessment methods that is used to masterplan projects, infrastructure, and buildings. He is also aiming to become accredited by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council.
Romain’s world class skills and experience align perfectly to where the industry and business are headed. As the world pursues net zero targets, ensuring our transport networks become more sustainable is going to be a priority for our clients and communities.
“As a business, we are dedicated to driving meaningful change in relation to the role of public transport in reducing carbon and promoting sustainability, health, and wellness benefits. Romain will assist us as we look to leverage international best practice, utilising his experience from projects such as HS2.
Chris Hurst, Executive General Manager – Transport Consultancy, SYSTRA ANZ
Although Romain has been based in Hong Kong, he is well known to many of our clients locally, having already worked on the Waitemata Harbour Crossing in Auckland.
I’m really excited to relocate to Australia and embark on a new challenge. Having a lasting impact on the sustainability of our cities and regions is one of the reasons why I studied engineering. I am thrilled to be focusing on that, bringing what I have learned to date and taking on new parameters pertaining to the ANZ market. There is a strong commitment and adherence to these values in the region with local clients looking for and seeking innovative and bold ideas.
“One of my core beliefs is that, just like value for money, we should be focusing on the value for carbon. I am looking forward to working with our clients and the rest of the business to ensure we are creating solutions that are sustainable and that also comply with our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments.
Romain Dufros
Since starting his career, Romain has worked on a variety of city-shaping projects. He has developed brownfield transport plans in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe and megaprojects in the Middle East. More recently, thanks to his time in Asia he has worked heavily in sustainable compact development and urbanism where he has been able to broaden his understanding to the range of possibilities that exist, particularly important as the ANZ region looks to densify.
He adds, “The varied nature of these projects has helped me to learn about the intricacies of the local markets. Whatever the solution, it needs to make sense, have a positive impact on our clients, the community, and their environment.”

Transferring from SYSTRA Brazil, Tereza will bolster our Transport Planning and Sustainability division bringing key skills in sustainability, E-Buses and Bus Rapid Transit.
Guillaume Paix, ANZ Transport Planning Lead says, “We’re thrilled to have Tereza join us. She exemplifies SYSTRA’s global reach and the power of our connected teams value.”
He adds, “As we look to grow our presence in the key markets of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand, our clients will benefit from her background in both public and private sectors. She brings to the team a key focus on transport demand studies and expertise in assessing the socio-economic viability of transportation projects.”
“I’ve wanted to move abroad for a few years now and when the opportunity presented itself, I grabbed it with both hands. The ease with which the transfer happened is testament to SYSTRA’s global mobility and commitment to connecting teams.”
Tereza Barros, Senior Consultant – Transport and Sustainability
Speaking of the opportunity, Tereza explains, “I am extremely passionate about sustainability and the role public transport can play in achieving net zero. I am a firm believer that transportation is more than just urban mobility, it can be an agent for social transformation.
“Coming from Brazil, I know this to be the case. In a region dominated by bus, I can bring unique experiences to our clients in Australia. Equally, I’m excited to learn more about the Active Transport sector and to develop my skills in data science.”
Global Experience provides unique insight
Transport Planning in Australia is at a critical junction in time as we transition away from the idea of moving vehicles to moving people.
“We can keep adding lanes of traffic to our streets or we can think about mobility differently. Tereza will provide terrific insight into how other regions have adapted to new ways of thinking. We’re particularly excited about her experience in Bus Rapid Transit, and E-Buses, both of which will become more and more common in Australia.”
Guillaume Paix
To improve the liveability and sustainability of our communities, active transport modes, and Electric buses are set to change the way people move.
“As data comes more freely available, new technology solutions are helping planners to make the best possible solutions and will assist us in embedding sustainable mobility options for the community to use,” says Tereza.
She adds, “Our team have developed many solutions that enable this modal shift. The Victorious Tool (formerly the Bus Disruption Tool) helped streamline disruption planning for a key client in Victoria. We also have our globally renowned CYCLOPS tool which is using open-source data to improve cycling safety and connectivity in our cities.”
Hands on Experience Reinforces Beliefs
In 2022, Tereza participated to SYSTRA’s Bridges to Prosperity project in Rwanda, a hands-on experience reinforcing her belief in transportation as a positive driver of societal change, aligning perfectly with her view that engineering can make a meaningful difference.
Tereza along with nine others spent two weeks helping to build an 80-metre pedestrian bridge in Mushishiro in Muhanga County.

Read more sur Transport PlanningWhat’s your job about?
SYSTRA is an engineering consulting firm so that means that I’m helping clients understand what their needs or issues are and working with them on a day-to-day basis. I’m currently undergoing my first rotation with a senior engineer in the transport sector and I’m shadowing him through his career to get a better idea of the work he does and learn more about the company. It’s really helpful having such a good mentor because it means I can ask him anything and we talk almost everyday. He’s really good at getting me involved in “bite-sized” tasks for different areas of the business so I get to try different things and meet different people within the company. My average day usually consists of a few meetings, going through emails, lunch with colleagues, and scheduling some extra productive hours to get work done, and usually the days go by pretty quickly. As a graduate, you tend to get a lot of “odd jobs” which I don’t mind because it’s 1-2 hours of work and when you’re done you feel more accomplished rather than working on a massive project where you can’t really see the end product for a few years.
What’s your background?
I grew up in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and moved closer to the city when I was in high school which had a pretty big impact on my schooling and my friends at the time. Changing schools in Year 10 was pretty tough but it helped me become more independent and I even got my first job. While I knew working in retail wasn’t for me in the long run, my colleagues made the job worthwhile. In my final year at university, I wanted to get some industry experience so I got a job in maintenance at a chocolate mousse factory. At times, juggling full-time university and two jobs was really tough but you learn a lot about yourself and if you can prioritise your time, you can actually achieve anything. When I finally graduated, I was pretty burnt out and I quit my job and I went backpacking through Europe for 3 months. I knew it was something I really wanted to do, as my family is Italian and Maltese and I definitely want to go back soon.
Flash forward to February 2023, I got off the plane and started my new job at SYSTRA two days later. Now it’s crazy to look back on because I’ve already been working for SYSTRA for four months! The final year was stressful enough and applying for jobs made it even more stressful but I’m glad it paid off and I could focus on my exams knowing I had a position at SYSTRA.
“There are so many different projects that the management team tries really hard to put you on a project that makes sense for your background and skill set.”
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Definitely yes, all of the graduates I’ve met at SYSTRA come from different backgrounds, the only things we have in common are an engineering degree, a willingness to learn and respect for the company. There are so many different projects that the management team tries really hard to put you on a project that makes sense for your background and skill set. That being said, there are some characteristics that will help you thrive no matter what company you work for, an open mind, a good attitude and persistence go a long way.
What’s the coolest thing about your job?
My job is pretty unique because I’m working so closely with a senior engineer it’s really easy for me to know if I’m doing my job well. We have daily meetings, usually only 15-30 minutes, where we go through what I’ve done and what I’ll be doing until the next meeting. It really gives me a chance to ask any questions and get feedback. In addition, my colleagues in Melbourne make an effort to try all the different lunch spots in our area so there’s always an open invite for some good food. We also have a tennis court in our building!
What are the limitations of your job?
Engineering consulting is such a broad and overwhelming industry so sometimes it can be hard to see where you fit in. Especially as a graduate, sometimes a project lead will need someone more experienced and because it’s a client’s request, there isn’t much room to persuade them otherwise. I think the biggest limitation of my job is being underestimated, sometimes it might feel like you’re not being utilised to your full potential but I think as time goes on, people get to know you better personally and professionally and you have a better sense of belonging.
3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student…
- Study hard but when you graduate, I promise you won’t remember that one test you failed in your second year, it’s not worth compromising your mental health over, just try your best.
- If you don’t understand something or need an extension, just email your lecturer, the worst they can say is no.
- Get yourself a diary. Digital. Physical. A Kmart one. It doesn’t matter but get one you like and write all of your due dates in there from week 1. Keep to-do lists and make internal deadlines for yourself so you can break down those bigger assessments.
