A new tram line designed by SYSTRA in the space of three years now runs through the streets of the city.

Since 24th January, the inhabitants of Casablanca have been able to benefit from a tram network extended by 16.5km. The newly opened sections cross nine districts, with close to a million people living in the vicinity of the tram lines, about a quarter of the population of the economic capital of Morocco.

For this assignment, awarded by Casa Transports, SYSTRA, leader of the SYSTRA/CID/SYSTRA Maroc/Arep consortium, was in charge of the project management of the entire execution for the infrastructure, the systems and the rolling stock.

The project also included the project management of the storage centre at Facultés and of the maintenance centre at Sidi Bernoussi. To operate both lines, 25 trams were acquired to reach a fleet of 62.

Eric Le Hir, project manager at SYSTRA, commented: “We are proud to have overcome all the challenges involved in its execution, notably when we achieved infrastructure reorganisation works simultaneously on the two interchanges with only nine days of interruption in August 2017. More recently, we delivered all the central systems migration without interruption of operation. This inauguration marks the final phase of another wonderful reference in the Maghreb for SYSTRA. Work on other tramways is still underway in the region, especially that of Sfax, awarded last year, for which we are responsible for the studies, and the Rabat extension works.”
