Rail

Etihad Rail is one of the biggest rail projects underway in the world. Once complete, this network will be 1,200km long and will transport freight and passengers across the United Arab Emirates (UAE), connecting with Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman.

Its construction is taking place in two phases:

The first, inaugurated in 2016 and dedicated solely to freight, has made it possible to connect the Al Dhafra region to Ruwais, particularly for the transport of granulated sulphur;
The second, started in 2020, plans to open the network to passengers but also to put into service a line linking the freight terminal of the deepwater port of Khalifa to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

A DESIGN CONSULTANT ASSIGNMENT

Since the completion of the North-South Railway in Saudi Arabia in 2018, the network of the Etihad Rail company is the latest large project in the region in which SYSTRA has been involved. After package A, furthest to the west and won by SYSTRA in 2019, it is package D, furthest to the east and the most complex, on which SYSTRA has been working since 2020 as Design Consultant.

SYSTRA’S CONNECTED TEAMS IN ACTION

In 2023, the first maritime railway bridge in the UAE was inaugurated. Its construction required precise planning and particularly thorough execution studies, carried out by SYSTRA’s connected teams throughout the world.

With a length of one kilometre, this new maritime bridge links the mainland to the Khalifa Port of Abu Dhabi, one of the largest deep-water logistics platforms in the Persian Gulf. It is dedicated to freight trains for transporting throughout the country goods and containers from all over the world.
