SYSTRA is one of the key players in one of Australia’s biggest transport projects, the construction of the first two automated metro lines in Sydney, of which the first was commissioned on 26th May 2019.

The Group’s teams in Australia have been working on the two lines on behalf of Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW): Sydney Metro Northwest and Sydney Metro City & Southwest. These lines are set to transform the experience of moving around in Australia’s biggest city, reducing journey times and road congestion while ensuring an effective service and a network covering developing neighbourhoods.

Sydney Metro Northwest which SYSTRA, in a consortium with Australian engineering firm GHD, delivered a key role as the Independent Certifier for the Operations, Trains and Systems (OTS) contract for five years, from 2014 to the inauguration in May 2019. SYSTRA was involved from preliminary design phase through manufacturing of systems, implementation, testing and commissioning, ready for first passenger service, and final completion in order to ensure TfNSW received the fit for purpose new driverless metro system they intended in the original specification.

More than 1,000 technical packages through the Design, Manufacturing, Construction, Testing & Commissioning and Final Completion phases before opening to the public were certified. The teams made use of all the experience gained over three decades by SYSTRA in the field of metro automated systems and certification methodology.

The City & Southwest Line is the second phase in the deployment of Sydney’s metro network. Since the end of 2018, SYSTRA has been working in a consortium with AECOM, responsible for the Independent Certification of 3 Brownfield Packages, covering the requalification then the modernisation of lines and existing infrastructures to accomodate the new automated metro, scheduled for commissioning by 2024.

TfNSW is in the process of releasing two more Metro’s to the market : one will connect Parramatta in the West to the CBD (Sydney Metro West) by 2030, and a second will connect Sydney’s second international airport (currently under construction) to the existing passenger train network at St Marys – both to be commissioned by 2026. SYSTRA will be looking to leverage their international and local expertise into supporting TfNSW for the delivery of these stage 3 and 4 Metros.
