SYSTRA is a partner in an ambitious project in Singapore to validate the functional safety of autonomous vehicles.

The ASV project – Automated driving Simulation & Validation – is being led in conjunction with the technological research institute SystemX and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore.

The aim of the project is to develop a digital simulation platform to test and validate the functional safety of autonomous vehicles in urban and semi-urban environments.

All the research work to which SYSTRA will have access will be led by NTU with its 1.8 hectares test circuits called CETRAN (Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research of Autonomous Vehicles). For 48 months, autonomous vehicles will be tested in this confined, dedicated environment. These tests will enable the exploration of scenarios under different climatic conditions, the identification of parameters to be assessed and the validation of perception models and vehicle decision in relation to its environment via different user cases. The project has a double objective: the establishment of international standards and the validation of functional safety for autonomous driving systems. These are the two major challenges to be overcome before autonomous vehicles can be deployed operationally on a large scale in the targeted territories.

Isabella Balbo, project coordinator in INO commented: “We are proud to be partners in this project which represents for SYSTRA an important reference in the field of autonomous vehicles and which enables the technical skills of SYSTRA’s teams in this new mode of transport to be enhanced. Singapore is an interesting testing ground, with the presence of companies such as BMW, Nutonomy, and Navya, and a high level of investment is foreseen.”

This project is line with the major strategic plan ‘Smart Mobility 2030’ led by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the organisation in charge of managing road infrastructure in Singapore.

SYSTRA is partnered with several organisations including France’s national rail company SNCF, the carmaker Renault and simulator firm OKTAL (via its AVSimulation subsidiary).
