A strategic terminal for the airport’s development
With greater capacity than in its previous configuration, Terminal 2 reached a first milestone in September 2025 with the opening of its new coach station, the Coach Hall. Since May 27, 2026, its departure facilities have gradually been welcoming passengers from several airlines, mainly regional and short-haul carriers.
Passengers now complete the main stages of the departure process at T2: check-in, bag drop, security screening, and immigration. They then travel to the boarding gates located in Terminal 1 via the Automated People Mover, the airport’s automated transit system. Eventually, T2 will include a boarding hall enabling it to handle both departures and arrivals directly.
SYSTRA’s expertise supporting passenger flows and access
SYSTRA supported Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) in organising passenger flows at one of the world’s busiest airport hubs. Drawing on our expertise in traffic engineering and transport planning, we designed smooth passenger journeys and helped optimise terminal operations.
Our work notably covered the design of landside arrival and departure facilities, the assessment of coach parking requirements, the organisation of vehicle circulation, and the sizing of passenger facilities and equipment.
Enhanced connectivity serving intermodality
Access to T2 is facilitated by several public transport options, including the Airport Express, the high-speed rail link to central Hong Kong, as well as buses and taxis. It is also accessible via a covered footbridge directly connecting it to a six-level car park with more than 1,000 spaces.
T2 also strengthens connections with the Greater Bay Area (GBA), a region comprising 11 major cities: Hong Kong, Macao, and 9 cities in Guangdong Province. Its new coach station includes a fully covered area with 41 bays for coaches, limousines, crew shuttles, and cross-boundary services, as well as ticketing counters and a dedicated boarding area. It enables the airport to connect to more than 110 destinations across the GBA.
A terminal designed for the future
In its new configuration, Terminal 2 combines efficiency and comfort, with smart technologies helping to deliver a smoother travel experience. It supports the rollout of Hong Kong International Airport’s three-runway system and the gradual expansion of its departure and arrival capacities.
With expected annual traffic of around 8 million passengers, it will help reinforce Hong Kong’s position among the world’s leading international air hubs. As work continues on the rest of T2’s infrastructure, SYSTRA Hong Kong remains committed to supporting AAHK in achieving its ambitions.
