Metro rail systems are critical to the economic prosperity of our communities and in making them more liveable.

THE MOST SUSTAINABLE AND EFFICIENT FORM OF MASS TRANSIT

Metro lines have long been used around the world as the most sustainable and efficient form of mass transit. They are in many ways an essential part of how our cities will cope with increasing density, removing cars from our roads, opening green space, and regenerating cities in a way that connects more people to public amenities faster.

Metro systems create mixed-use centres and walkable cities, allowing people to live and work in the same area. They provide a set and reliable transport corridor that provides property developers and other businesses the confidence they need to invest in an area – this provides new opportunities to pockets of our cities that have been neglected for decades.

BRINGING WORLD CLASS INFRASTRUCTURE TO CANADA

Metro rail systems are critical to Canada’s economic prosperity and to making our cities more livable. Done well, they will reduce carbon emissions and be part of the transition towards a sustainable future.

New metro systems ease pressure on existing infrastructure systems that are strained and often outdated. Strategies to activate these boroughs include connecting people to other transport modes, high-rise and multi-use infrastructure, new amenities, and green spaces to name a few.

THE FUTURE OF METRO

In the context of the pandemic crisis and the proliferation of technical inventions, SYSTRA Canada believes that the future of the metro is now an opportunity for innovation more than ever.

New technologies such as driverless metro and energy recovery are already almost systematically implemented in new lines. The future is taking shape with today’s IT tools, digital twin, connected assets, and  concern for the environment during construction and throughout the metro’s lifecycle. Disruptive systems may include electromagnetic suspension or suspended trains, but their effectiveness remains to be demonstrated.

THE SIGNATURE TEAM FOR METRO PROJECTS

Using our global reach across cities including Montreal, Paris, Sydney, Santiago, Cairo, and Mumbai, SYSTRA has been involved in almost half of the world’s metros. Whether it involves networks created from scratch or new lines, extensions or optimisations going all the way to full automation of an existing infrastructure, our urban mobility experts cover all the specificities of metro projects.

We have several world firsts under our belt: the automatic driving systems of Lille VAL and Paris line 14, the longest automatic line in Dubai, the busiest in the world in Mecca, lines in the densest networks in Shanghai, and the most ambitious metro project in the world, the Grand Paris Express.

Our local expertise covers the project lifecycle from the preliminary studies to the commissioning, project management, assistance in running operations, audits, independent checks of civil work, tracks, systems, and signalling, and  information regarding passenger satisfaction.
