Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. It will transform Sydney, delivering more trains and faster services for customers across the network. The NSW Government has awarded Lendlease the contract to deliver the new Sydney Metro Victoria Cross integrated station development in North Sydney and Lendlease has appointed SYSTRA to provide integrated Systems Engineering and Safety Assurance services.

Challenge

Victoria Cross will provide enhanced accessibility to business, education and residential communities via station access and entry through the pedestrian plaza opening to Miller, Denison and Berry streets.

SYSTRA will assist Lendlease in the delivery of its design milestones, and provide Systems Engineering Management, Requirements Management, Interface Management, Safety Assurance Management as well as providing expertise in specialist areas such as Systems Integration, RAM and Human Factors.

For the Human Factors element of the project, SYSTRA were engaged to lead the Design Stage 2 and 3. The project involved the integration and coordination of human factors activities with interface contractors (TSOM / Line-wide), Sydney Metro, and internal contractors. The main internal scope included civils, structures, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic fire and earthing and bonding. Separate scopes included architecture, wayfinding and customer centred design, building management systems and vertical transportation.

Approach

SYSTRA has developed the Station System Architecture to illustrate and communicate the complexity of the Victoria Cross integrated station development interfaces. Internal subcontractors include the Building Management Control System provider, Vertical Transport contractor and Ticketing contractor. External interfaces include the Trains, Systems, Operations, Maintenance and Line-wide contractors. Additionally, SYSTRA has developed the Master Interface Matrix and Interface Registers to manage the number of station interfaces and to ensure a holistic approach is implemented minimising technical integration risks.

Benefit

In delivering Safety Assurance for the project, SYSTRA has developed the overall safety argument using Goal Structured Notation to ensure. that Lendlease meets the requirements of the Independent Safety Assessor.

SYSTRA is also leading the development and implementation of the station System Integration Functions by working alongside other stakeholders and with MTR to enable the successful station integration with the wider Sydney Metro City & Southwest network.

In addition to the above Human Factors and Systems Engineering and Safety Assurance services, SYSTRA provided advice and guidance on the concept of ‘Integrating AEO’ as set out in the System Safety Standard T MU MD 20001 ST ensuring the Safety Assurance deliverables to Sydney Metro fulfilled the requirements of the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA).
