The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) was established in 2015 by the Victorian Government to oversee the largest rail infrastructure project in the state’s history. Central to the project is the elimination of 50 level crossings across metropolitan Melbourne by 2022, in addition to upgrading or constructing more than 20 train stations, laying many kilometres of new track and making associated rail improvements.

We provide SME resources to support alliances and clients for the delivery phase. We were awarded the panel in 2017 and continue to offer ongoing panel support.

Using technology to optimise disruption planning

To allow commuters to travel freely during times of rail disruption, Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) were required to facilitate bussing alternatives.

To help ensure an appropriate and efficient bus alternative, SYSTRA and VISEO were chosen to deliver the Bus Disruption planning tool.

The Bus Disruption Tool combines data and analytics to accelerate and streamline disruption planning. It allowed Metro Trains Melbourne to:

  • Optimise the bus schedule faster
  • Minimise disruption impacts on commuters
  • Facilitate collaboration and transparency across stakeholder network
  • Enable smarter decision making, minimising operational costs.

The platform also comes with modular functionality meaning the product can be scaled more broadly to other applications such as a Chatbot that is currently being trialed by LXRP, streaming live GPS bus data and schedules to customers. The team also implemented Agile Project Management to ensure the use of the Bus Disruption Tool was successful.

Users can also export data into a GTFS format (common for public transportation schedules), thereby compatible with third-party passenger apps.

The use of the Bus Disruption Tool was an Australian and global first and has since been recognised within the industry winning multiple awards.
