Description Of Project
Eastlink was the largest single road infrastructure project awarded in Australia and is a major value civil construction project in world terms. Peak monthly turnover was more than $100M per month with a workforce more than 1,500 and 450 staff expending 10 million manhours.
The Thiess John Holland Joint Venture (TJHJV) undertook the Design and Construction component of the EastLink Project for the concessionaire ConnectEast. An important part of the D&C works was the twin 1.6km tunnels excavated by roadheader and finished with a formed and tanked concrete lining.
SYSTRA Bamser Involvement
SYSTRA Bamser provided full time (onsite) technical assistance to support the tanking and concrete lining process.
- Design development within the tunnelling team to optimise the lining process, particularly the value engineering of the excavation volume and lining structural performance;
- Working with the TJH JV tunnel professionals to resolve the precast element procurement, placement, and its interaction with the full concrete formwork;
- Constructability analysis, completion of method statements, and quality assurance documents;
- As built records and reporting as required by TJH JV.
In addition, the project involved construction of about 45 kms of freeway-standard road connecting Melbourne’s eastern and south-eastern suburbs between the existing Eastern Freeway at Donvale and the Frankston Freeway on the Mornington Peninsula.
