SYSTRA is pleased to welcome Paul Furniss to our Rail Systems team, taking on a key role as a Signalling Engineering Manager.

With 25 years’ experience across the United Kingdom and Australia, Paul will bring to the business deep expertise in rail control and monitoring systems.

Jason Powell, Director – Rail Systems East Division, SYSTRA says, “We are incredibly excited to welcome Paul to our team. His demonstrated experience, technical skills, and collaborative way of working align with our values as a business.

“As we work through a generational rail boom, we’re seeing focus shifting towards different technologies to optimise new and existing assets. We see Paul’s expertise as being incredibly valuable and will help us provide leading solutions to complex problems.”

One of the major challenges for the rail industry, particularly within the rail signalling and communications disciplines is managing the impacts of Interoperability. With European Train Control Systems (ETCS) being implemented across a number of rail networks in Australia, mixed with the impact of a transitioning communications network towards the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), the industry will undergo significant change over the next decade and more.

Paul says, “Navigating the complexities of these highly specialised and technical disciplines is challenging but with it comes opportunities to learn and grow. SYSTRA has built a reputation over a long period of time as the signature team in this field so to join such a talented group is exciting.

“I’m looking forward to working with the local teams across Australia and New Zealand while simultaneously joining 11,000 experts around the world. Together we will help solve globally relevant problems like interoperability, delivering outstanding results for our clients.”

Beyond the technical areas of his work, Paul is looking forward to re-joining a team culture. Having worked on a contractual basis managing his own business for the last 15 years, the time was right to be part of a bigger purpose.

“I want to help give back to the industry,” says Paul. He adds, “I gain great satisfaction from mentoring young professionals and look forward to supporting those in my team to reach their full potential. Moreover, I am aware of the extensive opportunities at SYSTRA and am eager to contribute to its ongoing growth and success.”
