SYSTRA paves the way for Tanzania’s first monorail

The monorail project comprises three lines — Red, Orange and Yellow — with an initial pilot section planned for the Yellow line, linking the central business district (CBD) to Julius Nyerere International Airport.

Assessing the project’s potential

The study will define the project’s technical requirements, route alignment, technology options, costs and preferred implementation model. Its findings will help determine whether a monorail is the most suitable solution for Dar es Salaam’s rapidly growing transport needs, as the city’s population is projected to reach around 10 million by 2030 and demand for reliable mass transit continues to rise sharply.

The proposed system is intended to improve public transport, cut congestion and reduce travel times and transport costs, while improving access to jobs, commercial centres and essential services.

This feasibility study is a crucial step in determining the best way to deliver a modern, efficient and sustainable transport solution for Dar es Salaam’s future growth.

Supporting investment and sustainable urban growth

Tanzania Railways Corporation intends to involve the private sector in the project, using the feasibility phase to clarify opportunities for investors, technology providers and rail infrastructure suppliers.

The initiative is also expected to support wider economic benefits, including improved business efficiency, job creation, investment opportunities and higher property values along the corridor, while encouraging more coordinated urban development.

The project forms part of the government’s broader ambition to modernise urban transport under the National Development Vision 2050, which aims to promote sustainable urban and economic growth through modern infrastructure.
