Conventionnal Rail

The French Development Agency (AFD) has signed a partnership agreement with Egyptian National Railways (ENR) to modernise this railway line in the north of the country. It connects the main railway hub in the Nile Delta to Tanta and the port of Damietta on the Mediterranean coast, one of Egypt’s largest cargo ports.

Under this contract, SYSTRA will study a new signalling and communication system and then deploy it along the entire line. Our teams will also study and supervise the conversion of the El Mansoura–Damietta section to double track to better serve densely populated areas, following a route parallel to one of the branches of the Nile.

Greater safety for passengers, increased network capacity

The modernisation of Egypt’s rail network aims to make travel safer for passengers, increase the number of trains on the lines, and thus support the country’s economic development. At the heart of our assignment is the installation of new signalling lights, an electronic interlocking system to maintain operational safety, an operations control centre, and an automatic train protection system to supervise operations.

The modernised line will offer improved regularity and shorter journey times and will be used by both passenger and freight trains. The Egyptian authorities estimate that 4.2 million people will have better access to sustainable transport thanks to this line.

The Tanta-El Mansoura-Damietta railway line in figures:

  • 119km of line to be renovated
  • 65km of line to be built
  • 39 stations to modernise
  • 83 level crossings
  • 23 switches
  • More than 56 trains per day
