A civil engineering graduate of École des Ponts et Chaussées (Paris) and the University of Florence, Erica Calatozzo brings 18 years of experience in managing major infrastructure projects and engineering for complex structures. She joined SYSTRA in 2009 and has held numerous senior positions, including Chief Operating Officer of SYSTRA Italy, playing a key role in the integration of the teams from SWS Engineering, acquired in 2021, and in the transformation of the organisation.
I would like to express our gratitude to Paolo Cucino and Paolo Mazzalai, who successfully led SYSTRA SWS and then SYSTRA Italy, for their commitment, vision and the values they instilled in all the teams. I have every confidence in Erica Calatozzo’s knowledge of the organisation and expertise, and I am sure she will be able to take the subsidiary into a new phase of its development, based on collaboration, excellence and innovation.
Jean-Charles Vollery, CEO of SYSTRA
Italy, a key growth market for the SYSTRA Group
The SYSTRA Group has been present in Italy for nearly four decades. SYSTRA’s Italian teams have a high level of expertise in tunnel and underground infrastructure engineering, as well as in Design & Build. In 2025, SYSTRA Italy was ranked first among engineering firms in the ‘Campioni di Crescita’ ranking, established by the research firm Guamari, which recognises the growth of companies’ activities in the country.
SYSTRA is currently carrying out numerous design and construction supervision projects in Italy in the field of mobility, including studies for the tramways in Bologna, Rome and Brescia, the Bus Rapid Transit line in Bari, the Taranto railway station, and the construction of the Naples–Bari high-speed line and the deployment of ERTMS signalling on railway lines in the Campania region.
SYSTRA Italy is also a major player in the field of large-scale infrastructure projects, such as the two tunnel projects currently underway in the Alps: the Brenner Tunnel, with a contract to review the civil engineering studies for structures and equipment, and the Euralpin Lyon-Turin Tunnel, where SYSTRA is acting as project manager for both the French and Italian sections. The Group’s Italian subsidiary has also completed numerous tunnels in Italy, Norway, Turkey and Poland, as well as projects involving dams, bridges, roads and buildings such as the Garibaldi twin towers in Milan.
Finally, SYSTRA Italy is involved in sustainable development projects with the design of new waste-to-energy plants in Sicily and is supporting the reconstruction of the historic village of Arquata del Tronto in central-western Italy.
