To link the two branches of line 9 already in service, ‘Infrastructures de Catalunya’, the Catalan infrastructure manager, has called on SYSTRA to carry out the studies for the systems required for the interconnection.

SYSTRA Ibérica, in a consortium with META Engineering, has won the contract to design the automatic systems, signalling and platform facades for the central section of line 9 of the Barcelona metro. The aim of ‘Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona’ (TMB) is to link the northern and southern branches of this line with a single 11km underground section. When completed, line 9 will be one of the longest automatic metro lines in Europe.

Built right in the heart of Barcelona, between the university district and the Sagrera district, this new tunnel will have 11 stations, each with 60 metres of screen doors to protect the platforms. As an added challenge, line 9 is the deepest in the Barcelona network, with tunnels dug up to 80 metres underground. Construction of this infrastructure was completed in the first half of 2024, and it is now time to install the various systems, with full service scheduled for 2029.

This project marks the return of our teams to line 9, on which they have already worked in the past. It’s a major win, confirming our strengthened position in the Spanish transport market thanks to our local presence. It is also a key reference on one of the most developed metros in Europe, which will make SYSTRA even more visible and attractive to our clients and to future talent in the systems field.

SYSTRA back to work on line 9

Barcelona’s Line 9 currently comprises two sections:

  • Line 9 North, which opened in December 2009 and now serves La Sagrera – Can Zam (4.9 km),
  • Line 9 South, opened in 2016, between T1 Airport and the Zona Universitària.

By 2032, the complete route will enable passengers to quickly reach the centre of Barcelona, certain very busy areas such as Camp Nou stadium and Sant Pau hospital, and the districts of El Prat de Llobregat, Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Badalona.

SYSTRA’s first assignment for the Barcelona metro dates back to 1981, but the most significant remains the technical assistance provided to control the quality of the studies for line 9, carried out between 2008 and 2012.
