A strategic project with a range of benefits

The Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project is part of the Strategic Transport Plan, an initiative implemented by the Bangladeshi government’s Transport Coordination Authority. SYSTRA was awarded two contracts for the Dhaka Metro Line-6 in 2018, followed by another contract for the Dhaka Metro Line-1 in 2019.

The aim of the project is to ease traffic congestion and improve air pollution in Dhaka, thereby contributing to regional economic development and improvement of the urban environment. Passengers will benefit from a modern, safe, reliable transport system that is integrated with other systems, notably buses and regional trains.

The government aims to build five metro lines in the capital and surrounding area by 2030. The 20.1km MRT Line 6, the city’s first line, is expected to open in December 2021 to coincide with the country’s golden jubilee (50 years) of independence.
