We will support the regional and municipal authorities with our  expertise in tramway design so that Uppsala has a system which is both modern and sustainable.

The assignment will focus especially on solutions for routing, stops, technology choices, depots and vehicles.

Part of an abmitious government initiative

The project, which aims to bring back light rail to Uppsala after the demolition of the first tramway network in 1953, forms part of a wider plan by the Swedish government to construct 70,000 new homes in Uppsala county and the construction of new main line stations at Nyala, south of Uppsala, and Bergsbrunna near Knivsta on the railway line between Stockholm and Uppsala.

We are very proud to have received this assignment,” commented Andreas Persson, Business Development Manager, SYSTRA AB. ”We are a world-leading player in tramways and our historic references in this field were important factors in our being selected.

A sustainable transport solution for the city of Uppsala

The tram is an ideal solution for Uppsala’s transport needs. As well as reducing atmospheric pollution and easing traffic congestion, the new tramway network aims to provide a fast, reliable and safe way to move around.

Construction is scheduled to start in 2023/24 and completion in 2029.
