Our Canadian experts will work on the implementation of a global mobility solution for tramways and bus rapid transport (BRT).

SYSTRA Canada has had a major success in the public transport sector. In the context of a five-year contract, with the option of two additional years, the city of Quebec and the capital’s transport network (RTC) have chosen SYSTRA to accompany and advise them on the design of their tramway project, as well as the electrification of Quebec’s public transport network, which comprises 600 buses.

Two experts will be mobilised full time in Quebec for this project. They will be supported by the Montreal office and the teams of the Technical Directorate (DTE) in France.

SYSTRA was officially awarded this new contract on 19th November by the mayor of Quebec, Régis Lebeaume, who said: “This is the largest construction project in the history of the city.” He also spoke about the numerous tramway projects carried out by SYSTRA, referring not only to Bordeaux, Nice, Tours and Lyon but also to Montreal, Washington D.C., Algiers and even Casablanca. This contract represents a real acknowledgment of our expertise in design and tramway project management, acquired with our clients over several decades.

Dave Spagnolo, Head of our North America (AMR) operations commented: “Beyond all the previous mandates we have won in the sector for SYSTRA Canada, especially the design of the Montreal tramway in 2008 and our work accompanying the REM project in 2016/2017, this new contract is in line with our ambition to develop a new Transport business unit and to position ourselves as a strong and sustainable player in people’s mobility in Quebec and in Canada, in parallel with our historical activities. Congratulations to all the teams involved.”

Samuel Derosiaux, SYSTRA Canada’s Vice President: “We are at the start of a great professional adventure that will enable us to put the SYSTRA signature on a major project in Canada and also to open up exciting opportunities for us in the urban transport sector as well as in electromobility.”

The Quebec Tramway: objective 2026

The project mainly consists of the creation of two main routes, a new line of 23km linking Charlesbourg to Cap-Rouge via Parliament Hill with an underground section of 3.5km, as well as an entirely electrified BRT line of 17km with articulated buses. The future structure of Quebec’s network will form the backbone of the capital’s mobility.

An exceptionally good year for SYSTRA in Canada

2018 is not even over but has already been a year full of successes in Canada. From the first bus garage electrification contract in Montreal to a new contract with CDPQ on the REM (Réseau Express de Montréal), without forgetting our accompanying the operator VIA Rail Canada in obtaining its new fleet and in moving a step further on its High Frequency Rail program. SYSTRA Canada is diversifying its areas of expertise. Remember that after 28 years under the name Canarail, our colleagues joined the SYSTRA brand last July.
