Santiago inaugurates Line 3 of its metro with SYSTRA

The story of SYSTRA and the Santiago Metro continues. The new Line 3, 100% automatic, was inaugurated on 22nd January in the presence of President Sebastián Piñera.

SYSTRA teams provided basic design and specialised technical assistance for the railway systems of Line 3 on behalf of our client Metro S.A., Santiago’s metro authority. The line is driverless with a UTO GoA4 automatic train control system, platform screen doors, rigid catenary, air conditioning and non-turnstile access.

The line, which runs from the commune of La Reina in the Santiago Metropolitan Region northwards to the commune of Quilicura, will benefit 1.1 million inhabitants, cutting many journey times in half. It brings the total length of the Santiago Metro to 142km, making it the second longest in Latin America, just behind Mexico, in which SYSTRA also played a significant role.

SYSTRA and the Santiago Metro: almost 50 years of involvement

SYSTRA has been working with the Santiago Metro since the end of the 1960s. in July 2016, we completed the migration of Line 1 to CBTC, thereby raising the level of performance of this line. We are also collaborating with Metro S.A. to produce the basic systems design for the Line 2 extension.

In November 2017, Line 6 was inaugurated, the country’s first automatic metro line designed to be driverless. SYSTRA was involved at all stages of this project, from producing the studies to testing and commissioning, for all systems and rolling stock.

Commenting on this latest stage in SYSTRA’s work on the Santiago Metro, Hervé Laurain, Chile Managing Director, said: “The opening of Line 3 represents another major achievement for SYSTRA in our cooperation with our client Metro S.A. For all our assignments on the Santiago Metro, effective collaboration between the local and international teams of SYSTRA is always a key success factor.”
