For each station, the goal will be to improve connections, within a 500-metre radius, between the different mobility services: metro, bus lines, taxis, suburban rail lines, and more. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is a longstanding client of the Group, and we will support them in the design, infrastructure improvements, and implementation strategy for the programme.
We are proud to advance, alongside CMRL, a vision that strengthens first- and last-mile connectivity and promotes the use of sustainable public transport. This project highlights our continued commitment to delivering integrated urban mobility solutions that meet the needs of Chennai’s residents.

More accessible sidewalks, shaded walkways, pedestrian bridges, and easier access to stations are among the proposed improvements. A reorganisation of parking areas, drop-off zones, and the relocation of bus stops closer to station entrances are also planned.
The main high-traffic stations, notably Central, Airport, Guindy, Thousand Lights, Thirumangalam, and Alandur, are expected to be redeveloped as a priority.
The Chennai Metro: over a decade of commitment from SYSTRA
SYSTRA has been contributing to the development of the Chennai Metro network for over a decade. Since 2015, the Group has acted as detailed design consultant for the extension of the line in Phase 1 and, since 2021, in Phase 2, as well as, more recently, for the preparation of a study focusing on two strategic corridors. Furthermore, in 2023 SYSTRA contributed to the updating of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the Chennai Metropolitan Area.
