SYSTRA Canada has been selected for the Hamilton Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Ontario as part of the design joint venture for the Hamilton LRT Civil & Utilities Alliance, mandated by Metrolinx to deliver civil and utility works for the future transit line.
SYSTRA at the heart of Hamilton’s future light rail project in Canada

Alongside Hatch and Egis, SYSTRA Canada will provide engineering and design services for this major investment in mobility in the city of Hamilton. This project will help to bring about lasting improvements to urban travel and enhance accessibility for both residents and visitors. It forms part of an ambitious vision for transport infrastructure development, aimed at creating a more connected, smoother-flowing and more sustainable city.

Contributing to a new era of mobility for Hamilton

The Hamilton LRT will run along a 14-kilometre corridor through the city’s urban core, connecting key destinations from McMaster University to Eastgate Square and improving east-west mobility.

The Hamilton LRT project marks a new step in our growth in Canada for three major reasons. First, it is the first project in which SYSTRA Canada Transit is positioned as designer on the design-build side. Second, we are covering an infrastructure/civil engineering scope in addition to systems. Finally, it is an alliance, which represents an innovative procurement model in Canada.

The project will be delivered using an integrated partnership model bringing together public and private partners for the design, construction and delivery. Metrolinx is the project owner, Aecon is leading the construction, whilst Hatch, Egis and SYSTRA Canada form the consortium responsible for the design of civil engineering works and networks, as well as preliminary studies for stations, track and transport systems.

This project is being delivered through a new ‘Alliance’ model uniting all the project’s participants including the client. This model encourages transparency, joint decision-making, and early problem-solving, helping to improve efficiency, manage risks more effectively, and deliver better overall project performance.

Expertise for the development phase

The project is now entering an 18- to 24-month development phase during which partners will refine technical requirements, delivery strategy, cost parameters, and schedule, laying the groundwork for future construction and preparatory work across the corridor.

SYSTRA Canada’s involvement demonstrates the continued growth of its rail and public transport portfolio in Canada. By contributing to this project SYSTRA Canada reaffirms its commitment to more sustainable mobility across the country.
