Samsun is a Black Sea port city on the country’s northern coast where traffic congestion is a major problem. To remedy this issue, plans are underway to create a new east-west connection. This will involve upgrading existing roads and creating new routes within a 12km urban area.

SYSTRA Türkiye teams will be involved at all stages of the programme and will be responsible for the entire design process, from traffic studies and forecasts to geotechnical analyses, and detailed design studies of all civil engineering and electromechanical works.

Specifically, the project involves a road corridor comprising six bridges and one tunnel, offering multiple connections to the city’s road and urban network.

NUMEROUS challengeS

In this urban context, the project presents challenges in determining the alignment, requiring careful consideration to minimise impacts on existing infrastructure. The design also incorporates multi-level interchange studies to enhance network capacity and traffic flow, while earthworks will be optimised to keep cut-and-fill volumes to a minimum.

Cutting edge technology to enhance safety

The experts working on the project will use data analysis and traffic simulations to define the exact geometry of the intersections and select the most appropriate signalling devices. The aim is to ensure optimal performance for the new road while guaranteeing the safety of all users of this future urban artery.
