SYSTRA has supported India’s economic capital since 2007 in the design and construction of its metro network. The Group has provided a wide range of expertise at all project stages.

With a population of over 18 million, Mumbai is one of the most densely populated urban areas in the world. It is home to activities that are vital to India, accounting for more than 25% of industrial production, 40% of maritime transactions and 70% of the financial activity of the entire country.

Since 2007, SYSTRA has been working with the city to provide a metro network that meets the needs of its population. Line 1 is a perfect illustration of the expertise of our Group, which was responsible for its design until it was commissioned in 2014, and which has deployed the patented U-shaped viaduct solution for rapid construction with frugal use of concrete at the best possible cost.

SYSTRA is currently involved in the construction of five other metro lines in Mumbai:

  • Lines 2B, 3 and 4, which are due to come into service in 2021 and 2022. We have been involved from the preliminary design through to the detailed design, and then in supervising the civil engineering for the contractors.
  • Lines 5 and 9, for which civil engineering supervision was assigned to us in 2019 as General Consultant.

In all, SYSTRA is involved in the design of 111 stations and 126.8km of metro in Mumbai, representing almost 40% of the total 337km that the city plans to have by 2026. In order to facilitate travel on this network, which is set to become one of the busiest in the world, SYSTRA has also signed a unique visual identity for all the stations in the metro. This unified and standardised signage will benefit passengers and operators alike, enabling Mumbai to count on one of the most efficient metro systems in the world.
