From 20 November to 18 December 2022, the 22nd Football World Cup was held in Qatar, in 8 stadiums and 5 different cities in the Emirate. Faced with an event of this magnitude, which attracted almost 3.5 million spectators to the stands, the management of fan flows is essential, particularly in multimodal hubs and bus terminals.

Simulating pedestrian flows using LEGION

The modelling of pedestrian flows made it possible to analyse spaces and better manage waiting times in queues, ensuring safe, efficient and pleasant access to the competition venues.

To achieve this, SYSTRA used LEGION* to model traffic flows in four bus hubs, based on the plans for the Tournament Bus Services (TBS) lines designed specifically for the Cup by the Qatari operator Mowasalat. It was in these areas that the flow of fans travelling to and from the stadiums was most critical.

Thanks to SYSTRA’s advice, the layout of the passenger queues has been optimised, offering users an improved experience. The flow estimates for the modelling were agreed between SYSTRA, the Supreme Committee, Last Mile and TBS.
