Context

We are seeking a strategic and technically proficient Senior MEP Mechanical Engineer to join our integrated design and project delivery team. In this leadership role, you will serve as the mechanical discipline lead on complex, large-scale building projects—with a specific focus on rail and transit infrastructure projects (such as stations, maintenance facilities, and Depot), as well as commercial high-rises, healthcare facilities, and institutional campuses.

Missions/Main Duties

To lead the mechanical engineering discipline by ensuring that all designs, materials, and installations meet rigorous technical and regulatory standards. You will act as the client's technical authority, bridging the gap between design intent and field execution—verifying that shop drawings align with specifications and that on-site construction work is executed correctly, safely, and efficiently, particularly within the demanding environment of rail and transit projects.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

The day-to-day and project-based tasks:

  • Design Review & Compliance: Lead the technical review of mechanical designs (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection) developed by internal teams or external consultants. Ensure all designs comply with project specifications, relevant codes (IBC, IMC, UPC, ASHRAE), and rail-specific standards (e.g., NFPA 130).

  • Shop Drawing & Submittal Approval: Manage the thorough review and approval of all mechanical shop drawings, product data, and material samples. Verify that submitted materials and equipment conform to the contract documents and design intent before fabrication or procurement begins.

  • Site Works Inspection & Quality Control: Conduct regular site visits and inspections to monitor the progress and quality of mechanical installations. Identify discrepancies, deficiencies, or non-conforming work, and issue clear directives for corrective actions.

  • Rail & Transit Specialization: Apply deep domain expertise to oversee mechanical systems for rail projects, addressing unique challenges such as ventilation for tunnels and below-grade stations, smoke extraction systems, platform pressurization, and the specific environmental control needs of rail operations and equipment rooms.

  • Construction Support & Issue Resolution: Serve as the primary mechanical point of contact during construction. Review and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) and troubleshoot complex field issues, providing practical solutions that maintain design integrity without delaying project timelines.

  • Technical Leadership: Serve as the technical authority on mechanical engineering, resolving complex engineering challenges and performing peer reviews of design calculations, drawings, and specifications.

  • Client & Stakeholder Communication: Attend client meetings to present mechanical designs, explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, and manage client expectations regarding system performance and cost.

Profile/Skills

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s degree preferred).

  • Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.

  • Experience: Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in MEP consulting engineering or a design-build firm, specifically focused on building systems.

  • Rail Experience: Demonstrated and significant experience working on rail or transit projects (e.g., commuter rail, light rail, subway, or high-speed rail stations and facilities).

Systra is an equal opportunities company; this position is open to all applicants.
