Feasibility Study

Baffinland Iron Mines corporation (Baffinland), a Canadian mining company that produces the highest grade of direct shipping ore in the world on Baffin Island in Nunavut, is seeking approval from the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) to construct a railway line under Section 98 of the Canada Transportation Act.

The railway line will be approximately 145 km in length from the Mine Site, at Mary River, to Steensby Port (referred to as the Southern Transportation Corridor), located on northern Baffin Island, in the Qikiqtani Region of Nunavut, as part of the Mary River Phase 2 Expansion Project and would serve the currently operating iron mine (transport is currently operated by truck).

Baffinland aims at developing an initial 22 MTPA operation South at Steensby Port and ensuring that the operation can be expanded to 36 MTPA.

SYSTRA Canada’s mandate to drive estimating phase (CAPEX) and the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) is divided into four tasks:

  • Task 1: Support for quantities estimate & CAPEX (+/- 20-25%);
  • Task 2: FEED design work;
  • Task 3: Support for construction permitting;
  • Task 4: Tendering assistance for Procurement Packages.
