At the end of 2025, SYSTRA was awarded a new design contract in Egypt to prepare studies for the extension of the future metro linking Alexandria to Aboukir on the Mediterranean coast.
Alexandria metro reinvents itself with SYSTRA

The NAT, the National Authority for Tunnels, is preparing to convert a historic railway line into a regional metro line in Alexandria to serve and relieve congestion in this conurbation of more than 5 million inhabitants.

The construction and its extension is being carried out in several phases as described below:

  • Phase 1: Aboukir station to Misr station (about 22km) – under construction
  • And an extension in several phases:
    • Phase 2 A (Extension): From Kafr Abdo station to Max station (about 17.5km)
    • Phase 2 B (Extension): From Max station to the station situated at KM 21 of the Alexandria – Matrouh route (about 13.5km)
    • Phase 3 (Extension): From the KM 21 station to the Burj Al Arab station (about 20km)

NAT has just entrusted us with studies for the extension of the metro to KM 21 station, i.e. phases 2A and 2B. SYSTRA’s assignment will be to carry out preparatory technical, economic, financial and environmental studies, as well as a social, health and safety impact assessment, with the aim of securing project financing from an international lender.

Contributing to a project to turn a suburban railway line into a high frequency, modern and efficient metro represents a real challenge for our experts, and we will look forward to carrying out our assignment successfully on behalf of our client NAT. The upgraded metro line will encourage the use of public transport and thereby promote sustainable mobility.

Connecting Alexandria to Burj Al-Arab Airport

The primary objective of this extension, which will double the length of the metro, is to increase the range of the Alexandria–Aboukir line from El Zahria, up to the agglomeration of Ajami at KM 21.

In the past, SYSTRA was also involved in phase 1 of the Alexandria metro during the feasibility studies, providing support for the preparation and award of construction contracts and the evaluation of bids. Phase 1 is currently under construction.
