On September 16, 2024, Metroselskabet, the Danish capital's public metro operator, awarded SYSTRA Denmark the design studies for the fifth line of the Copenhagen metro, in a consortium with Rambøll.

SYSTRA Denmark has been awarded the basic design studies for the transport system, operation control centre and maintenance site of the future Copenhagen M5 line, in a consortium with Danish engineering firm Rambøll and Gottlieb Paludan Architects as subcontractor. Together, they will prepare the specifications for this line and provide technical advice on the specification of trains, rail infrastructure and all technical subsystems, as well as identifying all interfaces for the project. The assignment also includes advice on the operation, maintenance and upkeep of the metro.

The M5 line will serve the new Østhavnen district, furthering the modal shift of commuters from the capital to public transport. This will help reduce the number of daily car journeys, with a positive impact on the climate. The route, still under discussion, is expected to be circular with around ten stations, and will relieve congestion at the port.

We are delighted to be able to contribute to the M5 metro project in Copenhagen. The passenger experience is at the heart of the project, and we will benefit from all the Group’s experience gained on benchmark projects such as the Grand Paris Express and the Dubai metro. With this new project, SYSTRA confirms its involvement in all metro projects undertaken in Denmark, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with Metroselskabet.

The Copenhagen metro: an emblematic reference for SYSTRA

The Copenhagen metro is recognised for the quality of the service offered to passengers

Over the years, SYSTRA has been involved in all the metro projects undertaken in the Danish capital. The latest success is the Sydhavn extension to line 4, inaugurated in the summer of 2024, four years after the opening of Cityringen, the complete ring line to which SYSTRA France teams contributed. By integrating Atkins Denmark, who delivered almost exactly the same services on lines M3 and M4, also in a joint venture with Ramboll, SYSTRA now has references for all of Copenhagen’s metro lines.
