The Palm Jumeirah Monorail, or Dubai Monorail, is an aerial train built in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, linking the mainland with Palm Jumeirah, the iconic palm-shaped island. Inaugurated in 2009, the monorail is the most economical and convenient way to visit Palm Jumeirah, transporting more than 40,000 people a day.
A WIDE RANGE OF TECHNICAL SKILLS
In 2005, Marubeni Corp. commissioned SYSTRA to carry out external inspections to validate the following elements of the project: summary and detailed studies (civil engineering, E&M, and rail systems), preliminary operating plan, operation and maintenance plan. SYSTRA was also responsible for checking the safety file, i.e. validating the documents required for the safe operation and maintenance of the monorail system.
The system is driverless, but attendants are present on board, as on the Tokyo Disney Resort monorail. This is the first large monorail in the Middle East.
With a maximum speed of 70km/h, the line is 5.45km long, with 4 stations, 1 depot and an Operation Control Centre (0CC). A full journey takes around 20 minutes.
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Dubai’s monorail generates direct environmental benefits, through effective urban integration to combat congestion and a reduction in air and noise pollution, which is endemic in urban areas.
