The extension of line 3 of the Cairo Metro is now fully operational, following the inauguration on 15 May 2024 of a third and final section by the Egyptian Prime Minister and Minister of Transport.

The new section was inaugurated by the Egyptian Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, and the Egyptian Minister of Transport, Kamel El Wazir, in the presence of the Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), Dr Tarek Gewaily, and SYSTRA’s Faiçal Chaabane, Malcolm Peart and Mohamed El Azizy.

Commissioning took place on May 20. Line 3, which links the heart of the Egyptian capital to its western districts, will now be able to carry up to 1.5 million passengers per day. Five new stations have been added to the line, from Kit Kat to Cairo University.

The opening of this latest section is the final stage in a 7-year project to build phase 3 of line 3 of the Cairo Metro, a project which has involved a large number of SYSTRA Egypt teams as well as other Group entities, both in the design and construction phases. SYSTRA is the only engineering company to have worked on all three lines of the Cairo Metro, and we will be taking part in monitoring the modernisation of line 1. The Cairo Metro is an emblematic reference for SYSTRA in terms of the creation and development of metro networks in one of the most densely populated capitals in the world, and we are proud to be part of it.

For line 3, SYSTRA was leader of a consortium with Egis Rail, ACE and EHAF, working on behalf of NAT, the public entity in charge of transport projects in the country.

The development of the Cairo Metro is part of the Egypt Vision 2030 programme, which aims to increase the country’s supply of public transport and services. Running east-west, line 3 is interconnected with the other Cairo Metro lines, reaching Adly Mansour Central Interchange to the east and two branches to the west, one to Cairo University (Phase 3C, connecting with line 2) and the other to Rod al-Farag (Phase 3B, opening on 1 January 2024), after crossing the Nile twice to Kit Kat station (Phase 3A, opening on 6 October 2022).
