Sustainability & Environment Specialist

Context

We are seeking a skilled and passionate Sustainability and Environmental Engineer to join our team in Saudi Arabia. The ideal candidate will have expertise in sustainability practices and environmental compliance, strong communication skills, and experience managing certifications, submitting documentation, and ensuring compliance. This role also involves coordinating with project stakeholders, aligning engineering efforts with external partners, and ensuring successful project delivery and customer satisfaction.  Based on project requirements, the candidate may be located in urban or remote locations.

Missions/Main Duties

Environmental and Sustainability Compliance

• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability standards across the project.
• Conduct regular EMS 14001 audits and inspections to verify adherence to sustainability and environmental policies and procedures.

Sustainability Certification Process

• Lead the process for obtaining sustainability certifications (e.g., LEED, Mostadam, PEER, Envision, etc.).
• Develop and manage documentation required for sustainability certification submissions.
• Knowledge of embodied carbon management and LCA.

Design Review and Compliance

• Review project designs to ensure they meet environmental and sustainability criteria.
• Provide feedback and recommendations to design teams to enhance sustainability performance.

Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Gap Analysis

• Conduct ESIA gap analyses to identify areas of non-compliance or improvement.
• Develop action plans to address identified gaps and ensure compliance with ESIA requirements.

Environmental and Sustainability Deliverable Review

• Review and approve environmental and sustainability deliverables from contractors and consultants.
• Ensure all deliverables meet project specifications and regulatory requirements.

Environmental Compliance Assurance

• Monitor and enforce compliance with environmental laws, regulations, and project-specific requirements.
• Implement corrective actions to address any non-compliance issues.

Facilitating Environmental Legal Compliance

• Ensure the project complies with all relevant environmental legislation and permits.
• Liaise with legal teams to address any environmental legal issues that arise.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Engage with stakeholders to communicate environmental and sustainability goals and progress.
• Address stakeholder concerns related to environmental and sustainability issues.

Reporting and Documentation

• Maintain accurate records of environmental and sustainability activities, audits, and inspections.
• Prepare regular reports on environmental and sustainability performance for senior management.

Training and Awareness

• Develop and deliver training programs to enhance environmental and sustainability awareness among project staff.
• Promote best practices in environmental management and sustainability.

Profile/Skills

Experience: 8-10 years in sustainability and environmental fields, with at least 5 years focused on implementing LEED, Envision, and other certification requirements at a project level.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or a closely related field with demonstrable experience in sustainability certifications.

Preferred Professional Accreditation: LEED GA (preferably AP), Mostadam AP, Envision SP, and ISO 14001 EMS Lead Auditor.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Strong ability to engage with diverse project teams and contractors.

Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of sustainability certifications, environmental compliance assurance, and infrastructure design and construction phases.

Language Proficiency: Fluent in English and having a working knowledge of Arabic is an added advantage.

Regulatory Knowledge: Familiar with Saudi Arabian Green Building codes, environmental regulations, international sustainability standards (LEED & Envision), and best practices.

Software Skills: Extremely proficient in MS Office, Aconex, and BIM360, and proven expertise in statistical interpretation and presentation skills.

Data Management Skills: Expertise and ability to manage and interpret large-scale environmental and sustainability data.
