Context
The ITS Engineer will play a critical role within SYSTRA’s Digital and Engineering teams in Ireland, supporting the delivery of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) across major infrastructure projects. The primary objective is to assist in the design, development, assurance, and integration of ITS solutions (e.g. to optimise bus operations). This includes ensuring all ITS implementations meet safety, compliance, and quality standards.
The role will help drive technical excellence, support best practice processes, and contribute to SYSTRA’s commitment to innovative and sustainable transport infrastructure. The ITS Engineer will provide key technical support, stakeholder engagement, and assurance activities across multiple schemes, supporting project delivery and quality outcomes.
Missions/Main Duties
- Assisting in the design, review, and technical assurance of ITS implementations (e.g., traffic signal control, adaptive traffic control software, bus priority systems) across project lifecycles.
- Evaluating junction and signal controller designs, microsimulation and strategic modelling assessments, and ITS equipment specification.
- Preparing and reviewing technical reports, documentation, and assessments to support project delivery.
- Engaging and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders including Local Authorities, TII, and suppliers.
- Driving best practices and technical standards for ITS activities.
- Supporting the minimisation of traffic impacts during construction and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
- Providing technical guidance and contributing to resolutions for project risks and issues.
- Assisting in the management and dissemination of project learnings and best practices across the team.
Profile/Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 3+ years) designing, implementing, and assuring ITS solutions in major urban road/infrastructure projects.
- Strong technical knowledge of traffic signal controller design, adaptive traffic control software, junction design, and bus priority systems.
- Knowledge of traffic modelling (strategic, junction, microscopic) and assessment.
- Proficient in ITS equipment and documentation review.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Ability to manage technical outputs, prioritise tasks, and deliver against deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving with high attention to detail.
- Fully proficient in Microsoft Office suite and relevant ITS/project tools.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (or equivalent) is essential.
- Chartered Engineer status and membership in a professional institution is desirable.
- Safepass accreditation is desirable.
- Knowledge of safety, compliance, and best practice standards in ITS and road project environments.
