Babak Ahmadian, Discipline Lead (Bridges) at SYSTRA, himself an ICE Fellow, supported Stephen’s application. Babak said: “I was very pleased to support Steve’s Fellowship application. I’ve always found him to be a highly respected and committed professional who brings a great deal of experience, sound judgement and leadership to his work.
“Stephen is also very generous with his time and knowledge and has made a real contribution to supporting and developing others around him. For me, ICE Fellowship is an important recognition of the contribution someone has made to the profession over many years, and I think he thoroughly deserves that recognition.”

Stephen is a Technical Director with more than 22 years’ experience leading civil engineering teams and delivering major infrastructure projects across multiple sectors, including rail, power, highways, bridges and urban development. Since joining SYSTRA in 2014, he has held several senior leadership roles.
He now provides strategic technical oversight across major programmes, supports technical delivery and quality, and mentors senior leaders across the business. Stephen also makes a significant contribution to the wider profession as an ICE Supervising Civil Engineer and ICE Reviewer, supporting the development of engineers through mentoring and professional review.
Stephen Rowley – Technical Director (Project Delivery)
Stephen said: “I’m very proud to have been made a Fellow of the ICE. I didn’t find the journey to Chartered Engineer easy, so it’s particularly satisfying to reach this point. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor many engineers through their professional reviews and to become an ICE reviewer myself. Supporting others in their development is something I get a lot from, and I’m pleased that this has become such a rewarding part of my career.”
Career development is championed throughout SYSTRA, with support for every individual no matter what stage of their career they are at. Find out more about careers at SYSTRA.
