Their main mining operation, the Bloom Lake mine, consists in the exploitation of high-grade iron ore reserves near Fermont, Quebec. QIO is embarking on a significant expansion of its iron ore production through the development of the Kamistiatusset “Kami” Mine site, located near the town of Wabush, Newfoundland Labrador.

SYSTRA Canada has been mandated by QIO to perform a pre-feasibility study for the transportation of 9 MTPA (million metric tonnes per annum) of iron ore from the mine to the port of Pointe-Noire located near the city of Sept-Îles, Quebec.

A CAPEX (AACE Classes 4, then 3) was elaborated to estimate the cost of the various options and scenarios resulting from the alignment design at the mine site as well as the Pointe-Noire terminal. In addition, simulations have been carried out to determine the optimal configuration for the new infrastructures at the Pointe-Noire terminal.

SYSTRA examined different scenarios by changing the transportation demand based on discussion with the SFPPN and provided a decision support system to evaluate the future impact and capacity of the yard fleet size.
