Electric traction, load flow analysis

Amtrak’s 25Hz electric traction system is the most complex railroad power system in North America. This legacy system was built between 1915 and 1938 and has been operating near maximum capacity for some time.

To prepare for a possible capacity expansion of Amtrak’s electric traction system, equipment operating plan changes, and higher train frequencies and number of electric vehicles using the legacy system, SYSTRA conducted a study of the impacts to the 25Hz system capacity under the envisioned Next Generation High Speed Rail fleet operating plan.
