Rail Vikas Nigam Limited – KMRV (RVNL-KMRV) is spearheading the modernisation of Kolkata Metro’s iconic North-South Line (NS Line / Blue Line). Notably, this line is India’s first metro corridor.
SYSTRA India has been appointed as the General Consultant (GC) and Systems Project Management Consultant (PMC) for the CBTC migration project. Moreover, our mandate includes a comprehensive technical study for upgrading the existing legacy signalling system to Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC). This upgrade will enable higher Grades of Automation (GoA). In addition, it includes the preparation of complete tender documentation for system implementation and integration.
This strategic assignment strengthens SYSTRA’s leadership in signalling and train control upgrades. Consequently, it ensures the North-South Line evolves into a modern, high-capacity, automated metro system. At the same time, it minimises disruption to daily operations.
Key features of the project
- Comprehensive Systems PMC / GC Scope — Full technical study and migration planning for the transition of the NS Line from legacy signalling to advanced CBTC systems. Additionally, this includes upgrade to higher Grade of Automation (GoA) levels and seamless integration with existing infrastructure.
- Migration Strategy — Detailed analysis of current signalling, risk assessment, and design validation. There will also be interoperability studies and a phased implementation roadmap to achieve driverless-ready operations. This is done without compromising safety or service continuity.
- Tender Documentation — Preparation of complete technical specifications, bid documents, evaluation criteria, and contract packages. In addition, these cover the procurement and implementation of the CBTC system.
- Safety & Technology — Deployment of CBTC for automatic train protection, automatic train operation, and supervision (ATP/ATO/ATS). Furthermore, it supports reduced headways, real-time monitoring, and enhanced operational efficiency on a high-density urban corridor.
- Project Impact — Significant increase in line capacity and punctuality. This also brings improved safety standards and reduced energy consumption through optimised operations. At the same time, it ensures alignment with Indian Railways’ vision for automated metro networks.
