SYSTRA Hong Kong Innovating Traffic Design for Hong Kong Science Park (HKSTP)
Building 18W is an office and laboratory facility to accommodate both engineering and wet laboratories up to Biosafety Level 3 in Hong Kong Science Park. While ensuring stringent containment of hazardous materials, the design emphasises a human-centric approach, incorporating social spaces on every floor. Its flexible layout featuring open-plan labs aligned with vertical chimney shafts and integrated support zones and it allows for seamless adaptation to future research and operational needs.
SYSTRA Hong Kong encompasses specialised traffic consultancy services for the project, including the design of efficient car parking and loading/unloading bays, comprehensive traffic impact assessments, and the implementation of junction improvements to accommodate the growing population at the new buildings.
Conventional studies typically adhere to existing parking standards and requirements, which are not suitable for operations at Hong Kong Science Park (HKSTP). Given the premium on space and the limited areas available for parking, we have adopted a tailored car parking ratio that deviates from standard norms. This approach is based on a comprehensive review of all relevant HKSTP data and factors, enabling more efficient building design within a smaller footprint, while integrating innovation, sustainability, and adaptability and without compromising essential parking provisions.
This forward-thinking strategy ensures we maximise the use of limited land while still meeting the parking demands of a growing population. SYSTRA Hong Kong is proud to have contributed to the project that exemplifies excellence in our field. We remain committed to delivering practical, sustainable, and innovative traffic solutions that address our clients’ unique challenges.
