Since 2009, SYSTRA has been leading the consultant team providing planning, design, and construction support services for the implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC) on LIRR and Metro-North systems.

PTC enables LIRR and Metro-North trains to automatically communicate in real time with central dispatching offices–sharing information on train position, speed, and the actions of the locomotive engineer. If a train is traveling too fast, the system will automatically take control of the train, slowing it down and alerting the engineer.

SYSTRA developed the LIRR’s FRA-approved PTC Implementation and Development Plans, attaining Type Approval for application ASCES II in non-cab signal territory and Metro-North’s FRA-approved PTC Implementation Plan. In addition to developing specifications for the procurement of the PTC system integrator, SYSTRA assisted with the development of the LIRR’s PTC Safety Plan and performed RF propagation analyses for the 220 MHz spectrum.
